Worming

Worming 🪱 Time to 🪱 Worm Listed wormers further below👇🏽
2026 updated
🦚WORMING OPTIONS🦚if with chickens they can be wormed the first time at 4 weeks old (if free range, or already in the ground with a hen) 30 days after first touching the ground. OR , any age if symtoms from exposure. ✅If they are housed properly when without a mother hen…as in off the ground the first 16 weeks…after hatch with no other chicks added during that first 16 weeks…they should not in most cases have exposure and no need for worming until One Month (30 days) after the first day they touch the ground… 5 months old.
WORMERS🦚 you Must rotate with them to prevent resistance. Do not worm more than every three months ✅Do Not use the same wormer each scheduled worming….Otherwise they will stop working …resistance will cause high risk to untreatable fatal wormload. ‼️ do not skip follow ups when required to prevent fatal worm load from new hatch larvae~ follow ups where recommended complete the worming treatment.

🦚Adults…only worm the spring and fall….but definitly do worm them. Do Not wait for a problem…they go down and are lost fast when they aquire wormload…since birds always have some worms they just live with, management is key. Management will reduce the risk of protozoan infection as well along with environmental management. Please Note✅if with chickens then worm every 3 months… this is necessary if your peafowl are penned with chickens, to reduce risks to them as chickens often carry some parasites that don’t normally bother them but are fatal to Peafowl. OR treat if symptomatic ….you can’t use the same wormer each time or resistance will be built and they won’t work, then if they get a wormload or protozoan they will get fatally Ill anyway if the same wormer is used repeatedly.
‼️Always remember natural wormers such as pumpkin seed, oregano, DE etc…do NOT work against wormload & don’t help birds sickened by them…the natural options are great for boosting nutrition and may keep a few parasites at bay, but will not by any means deworm the most dangerous or the wormloads that are life threatening. Reliance on natural wormers can result in devastating loss of your bird.
✅⚠️Do NOT use De (diatomaceous earth), as this will damage your birds, lungs, and cause respiratory issues ~ the dust particles act like shards of glass in the lungs. Even your birds natural activity of the ground scratching , dust bathing etc.. will stir up the dangerous dust particles . Additionally, it’s completely ineffective against worms or parasitic loads.
✅⚠️⛔️Feed through and pellet wormers do NOT work either, it cannot be guaranteed that the bird will consume an effective measured dose , most will avoid it. Any that has eaten is usually a small amount that will cause resistance to the wormer , only agitating parasites and causing them to drive further into the organs with small ineffective doses …increasing risk of loss if your birds if they acquire heavy parasitic load.. . relied upon if the bird Needs a worming likely the bird will die as the parasites or worms will not respond to treatment . Any concern for chemicals or toxicity shouldn’t be a concern dosed properly…the concern of how deadly the worms and parasites are as well as how much they cause the bird to suffer overrides any other concern. ✨Use properly & they won’t become toxic. Key is to alternate/rotate wormers use dose by age for effectiveness and prevent resistance with proven effective doses & rotation⬇️⬇️
note~ ‼️NEVER‼️ provide IVERMECTIN POUR ON orally (⚠️as in never give it internally) and never injected‼️…Pour On is EXTERNAL USE ONLY. ‼️And the same goes not to apply injectables or orally dosed products externally (as in not on the skin) do NOT use in unfeathered chicks, toxicity risk.

🦚Ivermectin 1% injectable ~ (this is ivermectin injectable and should be orally dosed,)do not inject and ivermectin injectable should not be used in water treatment , it should be orally dosed as follows:🦚1/2cc (bird over 1 year) and 1/4 cc (bird under 1 year). Peachicks 2 months to under 4 months old..if needed only, 1/8cc syringed in the right side of the beak avoiding the center….under 2 months do not provide.
don’t give injections under 4 months old and never to any Thin bird if any age. ⚠️we do NOT ⚠️ recommend injections ‼️~unless you KNOW by experience How to safely give them, I repeat don’t inject under 4 months of age. All ‼️injectables can be provided orally 🚨. Injectable ivermectin 1% can be provided as *drench down the Right side of the birds throat avoid the center. This is where they breathe and it is the windpipe. Do not get any liquid in the center , Best hidden in bread, stress free, ideally provide the dosage hidden in a bite sized bread bite and toss to the bird. 🚨again, we do not recommend injections‼️ they are not necessary and injecting a bird to thin or the wrong way can Kill your bird.
One wrong injection ⚠️CAN KILL YOUR BIRD ✨These same dosages can be given by hiding the dosage in a bite-size bread ball, or a very small piece of bread, folded shut, or other appropriate treat such a a blueberry, and fed directly or tossed to the bird, as opposed to injecting or syringing. Ideal for birds that can’t be handled, or ferrel.
⭐️There is no need to handle your bird to Worm them it is fully effective, providing the dosage hidden inside a treat or bite sized bread ball tossed to the bird as previously stated or drinking water treatment option by the approved anti parasitics and dosage instruction below only.
Note~No need to repeat ivermectin , it’s 28 day residual in the system so it kills new hatch larvae. Works quickly against gapeworm as well as most worms your bird could encounter except tapeworm.
or option of ~
🦚for EXTERNAL parasites/mites/lice, ~ivermectin pour on(EXTERNAL use ONLY) ⚠️NEVER provide Ivermectin pour on internally And NEVER ORALLY-EXTERNAL ONLY ON THE SKIN~For a grown Peacock, dob or syringe (needle Removed)as a spot on ~ 1 cc of the Pour On under The Right wing, (preferable to avoid the organs on the left from absorbing) OR EQUALLY DISPERSED, ONLY THE 1cc total between the back of the neck and underarm area of the wing directly ON the SKIN , feathers spread with a syringe (needle removed!) the under wing area such as the underarm is the warmest and safest place for this to disperse naturally by the birds, body heat.
🦚Birds 4 months to under one year old will need 1/2 cc, 🐥2 months to 4 months old 1/4cc, 🐥⚠️one month -2 months old ~2/10 cc ONLY (NOT UNDER ONE MONTH OLD) if absolutely necessary, ⚠️Last resort, only applied under the right wing at the underarm , but “not reccomended “ due to “high risk toxicity “ under 2 months (🐣DON”T provide to hatchlings) under one month old do not provide for any reason) absolute ⚠️“ LAST RESORT” option to those I month -under 2 months old. ⚠️ with high risk.
‼️Repeat Ivermectin Pour on is ONLY for EXTERNAL use on the skin NEVER provide ivermectin pour on orally.
Treating mites and lice it is best to retreat in 10 days with the ivermectin pour on. This is your go to for effective treatment against all skin and EXTERNAL parasites ONLY , it may help worm internally however, it cannot be relied upon, it’s wise to provide safeguard(Fendbendazole) orally 14 days “After “ use of the ivermectin pour ( AFTER 14 days) on to the bird if internal worming is needed after Ivermectin pour on has been provided externally, (rem. Pour on ONLY externally) if your birds are infested or showing symptoms while afflicted. It’s best Rather to opt for Moxivet plus if your birds (over 2 months old as youngest must be fully feathered) need treating externally and internally rather than the ivermectin pour on if possible , as the only and best option for mites/lice/ including feather mites and leg mites, along with all internal parasites and worms both. ⭐️Moxivet plus is ideal for all peafowl 2 months old -Adulthood. Remember to treat the space as well with safe mite spray such as elector PSP ideally. Note: Not reccomended to use ivermectin pour on nor Moxivet plus with unfeathered chicks (under 2 months) 🐣high risk toxicity due to under developed organs ⭐️🐣opt for Elector PSP when under 2 months old. ⭐️
*🪱✨Ivermectin 1.87% horse paste(only ivermectin for the wormer ingredient/no other wormer added) not for Peachicks…for birds 12 months-adult~measure up 1/4 inch strip=(visually pea sized but properly doses measured exactly) hidden inside a bread bite or swiped inside the right side of the beak with your finger. *its important to accuratly measure the strip of ivermectin 1.87%paste with a ruler, measuring tape or other measuring device for 1/4 inch….ivermectin oral treatment does not need a follow up, ivermectin is residual in the system 28 days.
🦚safeguard liquid goat wormer~ or safeguard paste…panacur ,all are fendbendazole and the same, 12 mos-adults 3 cc of Safeguard on a piece of bread, folded closed & torn into small pieces, and feed it directly , provide daily for 5 days with this oral dosing of safeguard when routine worming , and follow up the same 10 days later 1/2 teaspoon for Gapeworm. Always Repeat in 10 days. Follow up 10 days later is critical .
🪱(if the Adult birds are symptomatic…. 1/2 teaspoon for 5 days consecutive ) repeat 10 days after the last dose provided for follow up⭐️Please note a pea size amount of safeguard /panacur(fendbendazole)is completely insufficient, 🚫and will NOT work⚠️4 months -up to a year, 2cc for 5 consecutive days. Repeat in 10 days . Fendbendazole(pea sized amount of safeguard/panacur/fendbendazole is NOT CORRECT & NOT EFFECTIVE.
⚠️CORRECT EFFECTIVE DOSE~safeguard panacur(fenbendazole ) adults 12 months through adulthood~3cc, repeat in 10 days. (If adults symptomatic-dose 1 full teaspoon , (5cc), once, (this is for symptomatic not routine worming …followed by daily 3cc for 4 more days in a row(5 days total) repeat in 10 days after the last dose, 3cc for 5 consecutive days with the follow up…Routine , no symptoms-3cc/daily 5days in a row, repeat 10 days later.
4 months to under a year symptomatic 🪱 3cc first dose , 1.5cc for 4 more days, (total 5 days ) days repeat in 10 days 1.5cc/5 days. , Not Symptomatic Routine worming 1.5cc/5 days repeat in 10 days.
Or for large flocks or Peachicks
✅🪱Safeguard liquid goat wormer as 💦water treatment (this dosage for all ages) Normal Routine Worming: ~30cc/gallon) for 5 days, , All Age of peafowl over 30 days old, mix fresh daily, or at least every other day, repeat in 10 days after the last dose., the same, for 5 days on follow up…works against gapeworm and most worms except should not be relied on against tapeworm. Safeguard is fendbendazole and is safe for peafowl and poultry . This must be mixed fresh daily and kept out of the sun…. After 8 to 10 hours this ingredients settles on the bottom and will become stale and ineffective if you do not provide fresh mixture the next day. Keep it out of the sun, and this treatment should be provided as the only source of drinking water during the treatment time.~ if your birds are free range plan to provide this treatment when you are free of any rain for a week so mud puddles are not available to drink out of rather than the treated water.

💧🪱Another option is safeguard Aqua Sol~ this is ONLY for large Flocks
The 3 mL presentation of Safe-Guard® AquaSol should NOT be used for flocks with a total body weight of less than 22 lbs because accurate doses cannot be provided.

Consult the table on the label of Aqua Sol to determine the volume of water required to prepare the medicated water based on flock weight. Use a clean mixing container appropriate for the daily volume of water, fill with the required amount of water, and set aside. Consult the table to determine the amount of Safe-Guard® AquaSol needed and prepare your medicated water following the mixing instructions below the table on the label. The table on the label provides information for one day. The total treatment period is five consecutive days. Agitate the vial containing Safe-Guard® AquaSol (fenbendazole oral suspension) for approximately 10 seconds. Attach the provided syringe to the vial cap while keeping the container upright. Use only the syringe supplied by Merck Animal Health for the preparation of the medicated water. Continued instructions are on the product label. ‼️This is for use in LARGE FLOCKS only.

✅Note: if your birds are free range, make sure Any you use as water treatment is the only source of their drinking water, (any water treatment wormers) and that you choose to worm when there will be no rain during the treatment period …We do not want mud puddles available.

🦚Oxfendazole 20% powder~(powder sulfate form of safeguard) does not mix easily!
1 teaspoon/gallon for 5 days(to mix, add 1/3 very hot water first and shake vigorously (use a latte frother works best! )then add the remaining cold water)
Can be ordered at https://petacs.com/product/oxfendazole-for-pigeons/
🦚and levamisole (as prohibit drench) ~ dissolves instantly and highly effective, especially if your birds are with chickens ~ safe for all age groups. The 🪱dosage for Levamisole is 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water for 3 days. Regardless of age for the dosage .Mix and provide fresh daily. Repeat in 10 days after the last dose.
Prohibit Levamisole you find on valley vet website. ‼️Don’t use Levamisole when birds are sick, it can increase the sickness. Opt for one of the other wormers. Well birds do very well on it. Ideal for birds with chickens in rotation . Can be ordered at Valley Vet website or Jeffers Equine website
🦚Valbazen…1cc one year-adult, 1/2 cc under a year…1/4 cc under 4 mos. Repeat in 10 days . … valbazen is only effective administered directly Orally ✅ to each bird. This is a broad spectrum Anti parasitic & will get most worms or parasites your bird encounters. Ideal to use when treating sickness in conjunction with antibiotics. You can hide it in a bite sized bread ball and feed directly or syringe it down the right side of the throat…avoiding the center. ⭐️Albendazole (Valbazen) broad spectrum wormer, must be given orally to each individual bird, preferably syringed down the right side of the throat, avoiding the center (needle removed from syringe ) or you can hide the dose in a bread bite and toss to the bird …never provide in water.Albendazole, like all benzimidazoles, are not soluble in water.‼️

‼️All wormers other than ivermectin or Moxivet ~requires a 10 day follow up for worming repeat to get new hatches larvae in order to compete the worming. Ivermectin is in the system 28 days and catches the new hatches larvae. All others require the follow up 10 Otherwise the worming will not be complete and fatal load can acquire from new hatch larvae.
The antiparasitics listed can be found at Family Farm and Home or TSC unless otherwise stated .

MOXIVET Plus wormer🦚 you’re only go to for external and internal worming both. This is formulated specifically by avian veternarians.

Mixes perfectly with drinking water.
Should be provided 2 days mixed fresh daily, as 24 hours drinking time total is critical~ they do not drink at night, consideration is 12 hours drinking time average each day, Controls the worms common to peafowl internally and externally ~

⚠️ Moxivet Plus cannot be safely given to chicks that still have down feathers.(under 2 months old) The manufacturer, Vetafarm, explicitly states on the product label: "DO NOT use with unfeathered chicks in the nest". Chicks that have not yet grown their full adult plumage lack the metabolic maturity to process the highly potent active ingredients (moxidectin and praziquant) 🐥use Elector PSP when under 2 months old.

🦚ABOUT
Poultry veterinarian recommended Elector PSP is the most effective, safest, easiest solution to eradicating mites and lice in your flock with NO egg WITHDRAWAL period! Elector is safe for you and your birds. Due to its multiple mechanisms of action, mites and lice do not develop resistance to it. Elector PSP, in the spinosyn class of insecticides, acts as both a larvicide and an adulticide, killing adults and their nits after ONE application when used properly.
Must be stored in a cool, DARK location until use; light degrades the active ingredient.

When part of an integrated pest management program, Elector PSP can be used in rotation with adulticides or larvicides for resistance management.
